The Pearl By: John Steinbeck In this novel, The Pearl, a pearl diver in the Gulf of Mexico named Kino finds the Pearl of the World, one of the largest pearls this town has ever seen.
Kino, his wife Juana, and his baby boy Coyotito have to leave town and go to the capital of Mexico to sell their pearl. At the beginning of the novel, the pearl that Kino finds is described as large as being incandescent and as" perfect as the moon" ; by the end of the novel, Kino looks at the pearl it is" ugly, gray, like a malignant growth.
" In general, mankinds are greedy, deceptive and evil. Greed for money brings out the worst in Kino, as it does with most of the other characters that encounter the pearl throughout the story. Through the actions of the different characters, Steinbeck comments on the dehumanizing effect that greed can have on people, regardless of their status in society. After finding the pearl of the world, Kino and Juana are plagued with violence and misfortune that surround the pearl and its value, ultimately leading to the babys death.
